The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
