England and Welsh Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
