Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck twice late to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
