Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
