In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
