Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
